# 3D Backyard Design in Austin: What to Review Before Building

April 09, 2026 · BigDecks

A backyard drawing becomes more useful when you can imagine an ordinary day in the space. Where will you step outside with coffee? Can someone move past the dining chairs? How does the path to a sauna relate to the deck? A 3D view helps bring those questions into the same conversation.

For an Austin project with several connected elements, the value of a model is the decisions it helps you make. It is a way to examine an arrangement before agreeing on what to build. It does not establish every construction detail or guarantee how a material will look in changing light.

## Start with a clear design brief

List the outdoor activities that matter to you, then put them in order. Dining, lounging, outdoor bathing, gardening, and entertaining can compete for the same part of the yard. Identifying priorities helps the designer understand what needs generous space and what can stay compact.

Bring current photographs, approximate dimensions, and any site information you already have. Mark doors, existing steps, trees, equipment, and access routes. Reference images are useful when you explain the specific element you like, such as a board profile or the relationship between a gate and a path.

## Review the model from everyday viewpoints

### Movement and furniture

Look at the route from the house to each outdoor area. Ask to see furniture in the arrangement, including chairs pulled away from a table. Check where a gate opens, where a person would pause, and how equipment or furniture could be brought into the yard.

### Privacy and views

Review the space from a seated position, nearby windows, and the route into the yard. A screen may work from one viewpoint and leave another exposed. Identify the view you want to preserve as carefully as the view you want to interrupt.

### Materials and scale

Compare the visual weight of deck boards, fence panels, and steel details. The BigDecks OG 4×12 refers to the real-wood surface boards, available in Douglas fir or Western red cedar. Ask to see that scale in context with your doors, steps, and furniture.

## Use the design to connect the whole yard

A deck, outdoor shower, and limestone path may each look appealing on their own. The model lets you consider their junctions: where the walking surface changes, where privacy begins, and where an equipment access route needs to remain open.

BigDecks offers real-wood decks, outdoor bathing, wood and steel fencing, and [landscape & stonework](https://bigdecks.co/#landscape). Considering the desired elements together gives you a plan to discuss, including any parts you may choose to build later.

## Know when Design Assist fits

[Design Assist](https://bigdecks.co/#design-assist) is paid 3D design and a plan for multi-component and site-plan projects. Its fee is credited to the build if you proceed with BigDecks. Straightforward builds do not have a design fee. The right starting point depends on how much planning your project needs.

Before moving ahead, confirm the design scope, the decisions still open, and what information is needed next. Keep a short list of changes so revisions can be considered together. The written project quote then confirms the construction scope, materials, and price.
