Decide what the fence should do
Separate the need to mark an edge from the need for privacy. A seating area may call for attention to a particular sightline, while a longer boundary raises questions about the view across the whole yard. Look from inside the house, from a chair on the deck, and from any nearby path.
Board spacing should be part of that review. Ask to see how the proposed layout appears from the positions that matter to you. The direction of the boards alone does not describe the privacy a fence will provide. Height, spacing, grade changes, and adjacent features all belong in the design discussion.
Choose a consistent board rhythm
Horizontal layouts draw attention to the pattern along the fence. Discuss board widths, joint locations, and the relationship between separate sections. A reference may appeal because the rhythm is uniform or because a deliberate variation adds interest. Name that preference so the builder can consider it in the proposed layout.
Wood appearance also deserves a specific conversation. Ask which cedar is proposed and discuss samples, visible knots, color variation, and the selected finish. Set expectations using the actual material choices. A photograph taken at a different project or under different light is a useful reference, but it should not be the only basis for selection.
Resolve gates and changes in grade early
A gate interrupts the board pattern, so include it in the first layout. Discuss where it belongs, what access it needs to provide, and how the pattern should relate to neighboring panels. Consider the route on each side and whether furniture, equipment, or other large items need to pass through.
Where the yard changes level, compare ways the fence line could respond. Ask how the top and bottom edges will look and how the pattern continues through the transition. Confirm property information and any project-specific review needed before establishing the fence location and extent.
Coordinate wood, steel, and finish
Steel can be visible as part of the composition or handled more quietly within the design. BigDecks carries out welding, metalwork, and carpentry in-house.
